The Power of Arts and Crafts
THE POWER OF ARTS AND CRAFTS
“The way to a fulfilled life is through the arts and crafts. They lead us out of consumerism. The practice of arts and crafts is a spiritual practice through which we honour the material world, and while we do that we develop a sense of beauty and generosity in our lives.” Satish Kumar, in Resurgence Magazine December 2010
The programme of courses at Hawkwood College embraces the concept of arts and crafts as a spiritual practice described by Satish Kumar. Hawkwood has hosted Caitlín Matthews and other shamanic teachers for many years and has developed a name for residential weekends in personal and spiritual development, creative writing, complementary health and well being, as well as a cosy, friendly atmosphere and delicious home-cooked food. “More and more we witness a link between practical, creative activity and well being,” says Katie Lloyd-Nunn, development coordinator. “We are offering a wider range of arts and crafts courses now, including the Language of Drawing, seasonal days in Creativity as Gateway to Healing, landscape painting, making natural skin care products, willow work, rag rugs, the meditative Chinese brush painting, jewellery making, and drawing and painting from life. People really enjoy getting out of their heads and making things and we are more than happy to provide a supportive atmosphere for this. Everyone is welcome,” she continues. No experience is necessary and materials and equipment are provided in many cases. Recent courses included Mosaics, Watercolours and Pop-Up Paper Sculpture.
