Archetypes are underlying patterns in human nature and culture. Every civilisation identifies its own favoured set of Archetypes and lives by them, until they get staid, stale or unsustainable. Times of required transition call for a change in archetypal pattern – what Jung called “a metamorphosis of the gods”. We are in such times…
But every transition requires that we change our story and this is intensely difficult. Humans tend to live (and die) by the stories we tell ourselves. The skill required is to first understand the underlying archetypal patterns of our life and time – and then to activate under-represented archetypal energies. We can evolve our story – individually and culturally – if we do it ‘one character (archetype) at a time’.
Richard Olivier has been researching Archetypes for 25 years and has spent the last 5 years with his co-creator of Archetypes at Work, Laurence Hillman, developing an experiential learning methodology using 10 archetypes. The method enables individuals and groups to evolve their story to become ‘future-fit’.
Once we understand these 10 Archetypes, we can recognise how they show up, in ourselves and in our lives. We all have the capacity to inhabit and embody them all, but habits often reduce our repertoire to a few select favourites – especially in times of stress or evolutionary tension. At these times, therefore, learning to expand our archetypal repertoire, to embody each of the 10 Archetypes at will, is a great gift. It enables greater resilience and agility in individuals and groups. As Laurence Hillman says: “Either you do the Gods – or the Gods do you!”
Wisdom of the Archetypes
In our Conversation That Matters Richard will be discussing the origins of Archetypal wisdom and the underlying principles of the Archetypes at Work method – how you can apply it in daily life.
