Seeing beneath the surface of homelessness, through the simple act of a haircut
Facilitator: Joshua Coombes
Event time: Thu 29th Apr 2021 at 7:00pm - Thu 29th Apr 2021 at 8:30pm
Most of us know what it’s like to walk past another person who is sleeping on the streets and to experience the feelings that confront us at that moment.
Homelessness is continuously rising around the world. In cities with such affluence, is it normal to see so many people all but forgotten by society? The statistics are daunting and do little to connect us to the nuanced lives being lived behind them.
Five years ago, Joshua began offering haircuts to men and women who were sleeping rough on the streets of London. He has since traveled the world continuing to do this, whilst sharing his experiences on social media amplifying the lives of people who are all too often invisible. Using the hashtag #DoSomethingForNothing to sign off each post, a movement sparked, as others began using their skills and time to join in their own way.
A haircut has been the perfect vehicle to sit and listen, because how often is it really that we get to spend an hour with a complete stranger? This presentation will explore themes of isolation and how crucial telling a new story is to pave the way for change.
