Each day includes morning meditation and sharing in the group, as well as developing skills in listening and playing the tutors’ extensive collection of hand-made instruments.

Event time: Thu 27th Aug 2020 at 4:00pm - Mon 31st Aug 2020 at 4:00pm

At a glance

  • A unique opportunity to create your own hand-made instrument
  • Learning with experienced teachers
  • Being outdoors and working with your hands – and your heart!

Participants will gain

  • Practical skills of metalwork
  • Knowledge of Ancient Tibet and meditation
  • Meet new friends in a retreat-like atmosphere

Generations of smiths and coppersmiths have dedicated their work to the search for the “one perfect all-transcending sound”. Under Ton and Carolina’s friendly, professional supervision you will learn the technique of forging to create your own singing bowl. The rhythm of metalwork, the heat of the forge and the alchemical process of shaping your own instrument in an outdoor studio offer a unique combination of physical and spiritual engagement.  The experience can be life changing as you meet and overcome the challenges of working with new materials to make your own instrument, but once the project is completed and the sound is tuned and released, it can be a moment of pure wonder and delight.

The comfortable surroundings, beautiful nature and delicious food support the physical demands of the process. A concert by the tutors is included in the course.

Ton Akkermans

Ton Akkermans and Carolina Schomper are partners and have been working together all over Europe since 2004.

Ton Akkermans worked for 18 years in child psychiatry and in Steiner education. He continues to work with young people, helping them to empower themselves through the process of forging. He undertakes restoration and commissions as a blacksmith, coppersmith and woodworker. He is a musician and trained sound therapist and founder of Foundation Odebaer, a spiritual centre in Holland. He recalls experiences as a blacksmith in other lifetimes and cultures, creating singing bowls and metal instruments in ancient Tibet. His past-life memories as a master bowl-maker in Tibet revealed how each bowl was made very intentionally for a very specific purpose. He brings this knowledge into the course to guide the making process. He also demonstrates how to re-tune antique bowls that have been brought from the east to the west for new purposes in this new time.
