Learn, rehearse, perform: making flute music together again

Join Elisabeth and John in this short online course exploring flute technique and repertoire, with opportunities to perform and work on an ensemble piece together.
In this 3-part course, we will come together to work on technique, put together a flute ensemble piece, and perform for each other with bespoke accompaniments recorded for you by our pianist, John Alley.

Elisabeth Parry will lead warm-up and rehearsal sessions, and John and Elisabeth together will work with participants to coach and encourage individual performances. Participants will have the opportunity to gather together and make music live, consolidating their work and performing solo and ensemble pieces in a follow-up weekend residential course with Elisabeth and John at Hawkwood.

Learn and consolidate the four essential elements of flute technique. Warm-up exercises (with accompaniment) and selected studies for development. Individual feedback.
Ensemble class (Piece 1): Learn and practice your part and the relationship to other parts using recorded backing tracks. Receive guidance and coaching on areas of difficulty. Class discussion on aspects of performance. 45 mins
Masterclass 1: Play with your own personalised accompaniment pre-recorded for you by John. Receive coaching and feedback from both Elisabeth and John. 45 mins.
Ensemble class 2 (Piece 2): Learn and practice your part and the relationship to other parts using recorded backing tracks. Receive guidance and coaching on areas of difficulty. The course will be held in real time with the tutor via the Zoom platform. Sign up to this platform is free. Elisabeth Parry is a performer and teacher who specialises in working with adult students, helping them learn and develop as players through lessons, group classes, and publications. Her courses are renowned for their friendly atmosphere, individualised approach and serious focus on technique, with a musical emphasis on ensemble playing. John Alley was Principal Keyboard Player of the London Symphony Orchestra for 25 years, as well as performing and recording with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, English Chamber Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and many others. He has performed in hundreds of BBC Proms and played on dozens of major film soundtracks – not least Harry Potter and Star Wars.
Elisabeth Parry and John Alley perform together frequently as a duo and collaborate in creating acclaimed flute publications for Aurea Capra Editions.
