Learning & Experiencing Futures Literacy

Facilitator: UNESCO Chair Loes Damhof & Artist Alex Lambie

As times feel more uncertain, we often respond too fast to urgency, regularly resulting in yet more of the same. To uncover and discover new genuine pathways we need new regenerative leadership.

In this three-day course, inspired by the beautiful Cotswolds and guided by experts, you will use Futures Literacy to disrupt the influence of urgency, and experience the power and potential of different ways of responding to uncertainty and complexity.

Earlybird priced places are sold out – places are now available at standard price.

If you would like to share with a friend, please call Cathy on 01453 759 034 to make your booking or email: info@hawkwoodcollege.co.uk

"What if how we solve problems, becomes the problem?" Bayo Akomolafe

At a Glance

  • Futures literacy: using futures to see the present anew
  • Deep Listening: our sensory responses to nature and art
  • Nesting: embracing emergence in your daily life
  • Regenerative leadership
  • Develop your regenerative leadership skills

Participants Will Gain

  • Learn how to use futures to make better (informed) decisions
  • Learn how to break the dominance of urgency in decision making
  • Learn how to be open to emerging phenomena
  • Learn to make space for a different, more sustainable sense of agency
  • Learn how to appreciate uncertainty and complexity

To learn how to approach complexity differently, we need to approach learning differently. If we are striving for a sustainable way of being in a circular economy, then our way of learning must be circular too.

Emergence Academy

The Emergence Academy is a regenerative learning ecosystem that guides leaders of today and leaders of tomorrow through unique experiences in the use and application of Futures Literacy; developing and deepening shared understanding and language to bridge gaps in organizational hierarchy and foster our transition towards greater resilience, an openness to spontaneity and an appreciation for not knowing.

This Emergence Academy course has been developed through a proud collaboration between UNESCO Futures Literacy Chair, Loes Damhof, artist and author of enki Alex Lambie, and Hawkwood Centre for Future Thinking. Come be part of this unique project!

What is Futures Literacy?

We use the future every day: we predict, we fear and we hope. When we use the future, we anticipate and how we anticipate matters, since it changes the present. For something that has such a deep impact on how we act and think in our daily lives, we know very little about how we use the future. Futures Literacy, developed within UNESCO, is the capability of imagining diverse and multiple futures, and using futures as lenses through which we look at the present anew. (Miller, 2018). By revealing and examining the assumptions we make about the future, we open ourselves up to better informed decisions and innovative ideas. In short, we actively start using the future to innovate the present.

"Futures Literacy Labs are experiential knowledge creation processes, that derive from the collective intelligence and openness of the group. enki seamlessly fits into this process and has proven to be an invaluable component for the learning space....it is a powerful tool for participants to become fully present and connected to themselves while sharing a profound experience."

— Loes Damhof, UNESCO Chair Futures Literacy

Retreat Programme

DAY 1

On day one you experience a Futures Literacy Laboratory that follows three phases of revealing existing assumptions, reframing our futures and rethinking the present. The Lab is a hands-on workshop that introduces Futures Literacy in a practical and experiential way. It offers plenty of insights on how to use futures differently and to stretch our imagination.

DAY 2

Day two is about emergence. Using natural surroundings and art-inspired techniques, you dive into the capability of anticipation for emergence. How do we learn to appreciate the unknown while remaining open at the same time? When we cannot plan the future, can we use her for emergence?

DAY 3

Day three is about nurturing these capabilities and applying them to your own context. After having been on expedition, how do we manifest in the world of concrete? How do we make space for different ways of thinking and being?
