A singing weekend with Gavin Carr
Enjoy a life-enhancing weekend traversing the vast landscapes of one of Classical music’s greatest creations. Gavin Carr will bring his trademark humour, passion and insight to this journey into Bach’s extraordinary world, so full of thrilling grandeur and achingly beautiful complexities. The course will culminate in an informal performance sing-through on Sunday afternoon.

We shall be working through J S Bach’s incomparable B Minor Mass, enjoying the challenges he sets and relishing the opportunities to sing some of the greatest music ever written. A broad range of singer will be involved, and all are welcome. The ability to read music at elementary level is required. It is not necessary to have sung the work before. We are providing hire copies. We will be accompanied by piano, and there will be a performance run-through of most of the work on Sunday afternoon. There will be a strong emphasis on delight and fun – ie, no stress! The aim is to enjoy exploring Bach’s incredible music and come away with a renewed sense of vigor and excitement in the possibilities of choral singing. Places are limited, and as these courses are enduringly popular you are strongly advised to sign up early.
Singers of all abilities are welcomed, but some experience of choral music is strongly recommended. The ability to read music at the elementary level is required. It is not necessary to have sung the work before. We are providing hire copies.
Please note that prices are listed per person. Residential options are fully inclusive with all meals provided. Non-residential options include suppers, lunches, and all refreshments and exclude B&B.
Arrival and registration 4.00-6.00pm. The course begins with supper at 6.30 pm and ends with a sing-through concert at 3.00pm on Sunday, to which guests are invited.
Gavin Carr, director of the Philharmonia Chorus and the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus, is one of the UK’s leading choral conductors. His career encompasses a considerable experience in early and baroque music alongside many cutting-edge contemporary commissions. As a solo baritone and a conductor of opera, he approaches his choral work from a perspective deeply embedded in the best vocal traditions, and always seeks to enable his singers to find the most vibrant vocal production appropriate to the repertoire.
