Outdoor practical & cultural weekend

The world’s first Gurkha activity weekend gives you the chance to experience the lifestyle of a Nepalese Gurkha in the great outdoors, learn about their culture and history, take part in fun physical activities. Eat Nepalese curry cooked by the Gurkha chefs around our campfire!

Proceeds from the Gurkha Getaway support the work of Snowland Journeys, enabling young people in Nepal to maintain contact with their families alongside their education, and developing livelihoods in Himalayan communities.
So, not only do you get to enjoy an extraordinary experience, you will be helping Nepalese children at the same time. Adventure meets social value!
Gurkha Activity Weekend
The weekend will be located on our Hawkwood grounds! With exclusive use of our ‘outdoor classroom’ which has views over the rolling Cotswold valleys. There are extensive grounds to explore including an orchard, biodynamic farming land, natural spring and gardens with an array of beautiful flowers.
With a field base set up with a communal roundhouse, outdoor kitchen and camping ‘village’, set in woodlands.
There are two options for accommodation:
- Camping is included in the course price for those wishing to bring their tents
- You may prefer to book a bedroom in the converted 19th-century Grade II listed building

Zara Balfour is CEO of Snowland Journeys , whose mission is to help children of the Himalayan communities of Nepal to maintain contact with their families, communities and culture alongside their right to education.
Zara is also a motivational speaker, having given lecture tours and been featured on BBC Woman’s Hour, BBC World, Talk Radio and by the Royal Geographical Society, of which she is a Fellow. She is currently studying for Nature Facilitation Leader qualifications.
Phil Briggs helped develop Snowland Journeys and works alongside Zara. A former Royal Marines Commando, Phil has worked as a professional in the outdoor sector for nearly 30 years and specialises in wilderness based personal and social development programmes, geared towards helping some of the most disengaged and marginalised members of society.
Phil is also a passionate conservationist for wildlife and the environment.
