Japanese Embroidery (shishu in Japanese) is a hand-embroidery technique that is over 1000 years old. The exquisite designs are based on seasons and celebrations. You can find these primarily on the traditional dress of kimono and obi.
This tradition was handed down through Kurenai-Kai in Japan and the Japanese Embroidery Center in Atlanta.
This unique type of embroidery uses pure silk threads, and works on the finest quality of silk and metallic fabrics. All equipment used is Japanese. These include very fine handmade needles.
We mount the fabric drum-tight on a traditional embroidery frame. This will keep the tension on the threads to enhance the shine. We use Japanese gold and silver metallic threads in many colours and thicknesses. The tradition uses reeled silk, either as flat thread or twisted by hand. These are made into a variety of sizes and degrees of twist.
Instruction in the techniques are given in an orderly progression of phases to develop your skill. While there are about fifty basic techniques, some phases cover a number of procedures, and others focus on only one.
Along with instruction in technique you will be introduced to the symbolism and colour usage that form part of the tradition of Japanese Embroidery.
