22-040 Listening Across Profound Difference
Mon 24Jan

A community event

Facilitator: Katherine Long

How do we listen across profound difference? Stand in the shoes of people who seem ‘on the other side’? Whether as leaders, change practitioners, citizens activists, how do we rise to the challenge of deep, empathic listening at such a polarised time in history?

This session will be held in the spirit of experimental inquiry, incorporating movement and creativity. A place to show up as yourself and be authentic, to sit with discomfort, and sense into new possibilities.

Event time: Mon 24th Jan 2022 at 7:30pm - Mon 24th Jan 2022 at 9:30pm

The last few years have exposed profound rifts in our societies and communities, creating extreme polarisation around basic agreements regarding the democratic process, human rights and responsibilities.

The cumulative impacts of Brexit, climate crisis, social justice movement, immigration, major political upheavals as well as COVID measures have highlighted both subtle and significant differences in beliefs and values – even amongst ‘like-minded’ communities.

Without courage and commitment, we risk losing spaces for meaningful dialogue to bridge differences and find new ways forward, and yet the emotional and intellectual burden of maintaining engagement can often feel overwhelming. Cocooned in social media echo chambers, confirmation bias takes over, providing temporary relief from the barrage of confusion and chaos.

Listening across Profound Difference is a safe, non-judgemental listening space to share experiences of these challenges, in a compassionate learning environment. It is not intended to teach a particular methodology, or provide a solution. It’s a place where you can show up as you, in all your multiple identities, and reflect with others.

It’s anticipated that we will be exploring some key tensions, e.g:

  • Being a change practitioner/facilitator – and being a citizen and activist
  • Commitment to a considered view/position – staying open and emergent
  • Self/bodily sovereignty – and part of a much bigger social body

The session is primarily aimed at anyone engaged in leading or facilitating change at whatever scale, or just wanting to be a responsible citizen.
