Matthew Barley and his 11-piece string ensemble chart a journey that always returns to Brazilian jazz, taking in many other styles on the way!
Event time: Tue 4th Jun at 7:00pm - Tue 4th Jun at 9:00pm
Matthew Barley and his 11-piece string ensemble chart a journey that always returns to Brazilian jazz, taking in many other styles on the way: a bit of Bach, some Philip Glass, Barber’s famously beautiful Adagio, and some free improvisations to link it all together. The sounds of Brazil are not so well known on these shores, apart for Girl From Ipanema by the great Jobim, and his famous tune is joined by songs from Milton Nascimento, Elis Regina and Caetano Veloso. Barley’s arrangements for solo cello and string ensemble capture the sophisticated harmonies, the sensuous melodies and the magnetic rhythms.
Artist Residency Spotlight Events
We warmly invite you to our 2019 season of Artist Residency Spotlight events. In this series at Hawkwood, we invite established and emerging artists to share the work they have created or developed whilst on their Residency. Taking place in the intimate setting of Hawkwood, these exclusive informal sharings of work offer audiences the chance to connect with the artist on a personal level in a relaxed setting, and potentially support them by providing feeding back on the work.
We have an open invitation for everyone, of all ages and all creative interests, to come and join us.
Tickets will be available on the door but we recommend booking online in advance as events can sell out.
Entry is by donation to the Eileen Nesfield-Cookson Bursary Fund.
Matthew Barley has created a unique international career full of improvisation, new music, cutting-edge computer technology, collaboration with jazz and Indian musicians, education, and arranging – but always with cello playing at the heart. He has played with some of the finest orchestras (Frankfurt Radio Symphony, BBC Philharmonic/Scottish, Czech Philharmonic), in some of the greatest concert halls, given premieres by major composers (MacMillan, Dusapin, Larcher) and appeared on tv and radio worldwide. He counts himself blessed to be able to dream up unusual projects and (usually) make them happen, and also pursue his own personal dreams of spending time with family and in nature. He lives in London with his wife, violinist Viktoria Mullova.Visit Tutor's Website
