In this one-day workshop, we will make wash balls using plants harvested from the Hawkwood grounds and we will learn how to make soap using the cold-process method. You will be introduced to the history of soap-making and we will touch on the science and art of this most stimulating craft. Leave with a foundation in soap making and with enough experience and understanding to carry on making on your own at home.

The course is primarily a practical introduction. Learn how to make herbal wash balls. During this workshop, you will go through all the steps that go into the production of a cold-processed, vegetable-oil-based soap. As an experienced teacher, Jonathan will provide a broad background for the craft. You will be guided, and gain practical experience in the processes it involves. The course includes an overview of this craft’s history. You will learn the ins-and-outs of sourcing ingredients and the nature of plant colors and scents. His experience of developing and running a soap business over many years provides an additional layer of learning for the person interested in trying out this craft.
No prior experience needed. Please bring an apron. Protective gloves will be provided.
Price includes materials, delicious two-course lunch and refreshments.

Jonathan is an adult educator, researcher and author. He first started working as a soap-making tutor twenty years ago, with young adults with complex years. Soon after establishing his approach to teaching soap making Jonathan and his wife started a soap making company (Quintessential handmade soap) and they sold their soap in the Stroud Farmers Market and in local stores for many years. Jonathan takes a holistic approach to soap making and a course with Jonathan touches on the history of soap making, the science and art of soap making and practical techniques based on ingredients sourced from the plant world.
