Facilitator: Caitlín Matthews
This late summer retreat will open your perception to subtle levels of knowing in nature and in your own soul. Hawkwood’s beautiful gardens, natural spring, labyrinth and woodland provide a supportive context for our explorations.
Event time: Fri 26th Aug 2022 at 4:00pm - Sun 28th Aug 2022 at 4:00pm
The ancient Celtic worlds of Ireland and Britain were home to a wealth of divinatory practice and wisdom. Caitlín has made a special study of these oracular and sacred traditions over the last 35 years, showing how they can illuminate the present moment. These practices are based upon the triad, ‘Three candles which illumine every darkness: truth, nature and knowledge.’ Used by both druids, prophets and poets, as well as by ordinary people, these ways enabled clarity and guidance when decisions had to take, in the finding of lost animals or people, and for knowledge in times of doubt and uncertainty.
The Art of Celtic Seership draws upon our subtle perceptions to help reveal nature’s truth and the soul’s knowledge. Participants will learn how to read the omens of the natural world and use traditional methods, including ‘the Three Illuminations’ and ‘the Augury of Brighid’ which was employed by the ancestral seers of the ancient Celtic world. There will be opportunities to give and receive oracles and auguries, by means of the dha shealladh or ‘the two seeings’ and by other traditional methods.
The book of nature can still be read by anyone and is as eloquent today as once it was, and so we will learn how to quiet our minds, drawing upon our instincts and perceptions, and speaking from the depths of our communion with the timeless Otherworld, so that we may learn to perceive truth in our daily lives. This weekend retreat is open to all.
Hawkwood is a stunning Grade II listed 19th Century country house, surrounded by 42 acres of sustainably managed woodland, farmland, and gardens. Set in the heart of the Cotswolds – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – it is a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. With a diverse selection of nearly 150 courses, there’s plenty to choose from, including courses in transformative leadership, future thinking, inner life, music and the arts. Our programme of courses is led by experienced tutors and leaders in their fields.
Both residential and non-residential rates are available. Residential options are fully inclusive with all meals provided. Non-residential options include suppers, lunches and all refreshments and exclude B&B.
No special skills are needed to join this course, which is open to all.
Participants need to bring a wooden staff or wand, OR a small smooth stone; a covering for their eyes, and a small personal object whose history is known to them and that they don't mind other people handling – it will return home with them. We will be spending short periods outside, regardless of weather, so bring appropriate footwear and clothing.
Arrival with tea on Friday at 4.00 pm; retreat begins with supper at 6.30 pm and ends after lunch on Sunday.
