Leadership is an art, not a science, and like all art the artist is fully reflected in the art they produce. So the key to leadership is the mastery of yourself.
The Leader Within programme is about you. Through enhancing your understanding of yourself and how you interact with your environment, and the circumstances and the people that you come into contact with, you will extend the choices you have in how you respond in the moment.

- Daring to explore your potential to lead
- Being the leader you are not the leader you think you should be
- Finding your leadership fit
- Becoming the leader you are
Participants Will Gain
- A deeper understanding of yourself
- An understanding of what it means to be aware
- A foundation for building your confidence
All leaders are unique and defined by their life’s experiences. We all have a leader within us that might in certain circumstances want to hide away, and in others burst forward and lead with confidence.
“I hope to encourage you to search for your leader within, or if you have already found him or her to look for ways to enhance your effectiveness, through knowing yourself better.” – Trevor Bentley
When we wish to develop and grow and to change how we see the world and operate in it, it is natural to look beyond ourselves to learn from and to emulate others. This can create a dichotomy for the individual, as Beisser says – ‘He is constantly moving between what he “should be” and what he thinks he “is,” never fully identifying with either’. This idea of being more who I really am, rather than who I think I am, or want to be, is the ‘paradoxical theory of change’.
“The paradoxical theory of change states that we change when we become what we are, not when we try to become what we are not.”
The paradoxical theory of change states that we change when we become what we are, not when we try to become what we are not. Trevor Bentley works with many leaders, witnessing the struggle and strive to be who they are not. This relief is in discovering it’s enough to simply be oneself.
The Leader Within
“If I bring my uniqueness into the present moment which is also unique, I have a level of complexity to cope with. Though the situation might seem similar, it is not the ‘same’ context. When I find myself in a familiar context I usually follow patterns of behaviour and interactions that I have observed to be appropriate, expected, accepted and/or effective on previous occasions.
When I find myself in a new and unfamiliar situation, a context that I have no previous experience of, I tend to be fully switched on with all my antennae out. I have no previous pattern to rely on, I have to ‘wing it’. It is likely that I will be highly attentive and experimental with my reactions and responses, learning as I go what seems to be working for me and what doesn’t. Such occasions can be exciting, even scary.
Through really knowing and understanding myself I strengthen my capacity to respond in the moment, and to step forward and lead when circumstances favour my own unique capacity to lead.” – Trevor Bentley
