More about Sketchbooking

Many of us aspire to keep a regular sketchbook, journal or diary but it's deceptively hard to get started, let alone stick to. This workshop is a day where you can put your inhibitions, distractions and procrastination aside to start your sketchbook. We will spend the day drawing and painting onsite, experimenting with materials and creating a response to the breathtaking space at Hawkwood.

Guidance and tuition on drawing will be available for those who want it, while advanced students will have the opportunity to explore their own ideas. All will start their own sketchbook and come away with the confidence and inspiration needed to establish a lasting habit.

Practical Information

All materials are included in this class. Provided for use on the day are: Watercolours
Brushes
Pens
Pencils
Charcoal
You're welcome to bring any other materials with you that you'd like to experiment with, provided that they're suitable for small scale sketchbook work (oil paints would not be suitable, for example). You'll each be provided with an A5 sketchbook to take home.

Please bring shoes and clothing suitable for walking/sitting/drawing outside. A bit of drizzle won’t put us off but in case of torrential rain you may like to bring some photographs of your own environment - home, garden, landscapes or holidays - to draw from with guidance from Emma. These can be on a phone/tablet or print out.

This class is suitable for complete beginners looking for an introduction to drawing/painting techniques and some direction. To get the most out of this class, students will be open to the challenges involved with learning a new skill while inspired to draw and record the world around them.

Arrivals from 9:15am for a 9:30am start

Emma is a gifted teacher - as well as being a very pleasant person who made the sessions so enjoyable as well as productive.

The focus will be on drawing, enjoying drawing, and using drawing to gain new skills, having fun along the way!

Portraiture

Portraiture

2nd November 2024

Why are we, humans, drawn to represent ourselves in image? Humanoid figures are amongst some of the earliest surviving forms of art, so a desire to capture likeness or a portrayal of people is nothing new but how should you go about learning to do just that? A foundational knowledge of drawing is important to all artists, even if your interests lie in abstract or graphical art. A fundamental understanding of anatomy in portraiture will improve your interpretation of the human body and make the process of capturing it on paper easier and more expressive.

Life Drawing
